The Protein (Dukan) Diet: Day 3 results
Thank you to Deanna for turning me on to this. Mom started the Dukan diet about two weeks ago and has already lost 17 pounds. SEVENTEEN FRIGGIN POUNDS. So that gave me a well-needed kick in the arse to get going and seriously commit to it. And it IS a commitment. Do you know how hard it is to resist eating what everyone else is and just stick to protein? So I've been drinking my protein shakes, eating fat-free yogurt and lean sandwich meat, fat-free cottage cheese, turkey bacon, etc. I started this two days ago, on Friday (so today is actually the start of day 3, I guess) and I'm already down 2 pounds. Doesn't sound like much but I'm pretty happy. Its a good start. Will keep you guys posted on the results as the days go by.

Back in the Groove
Hello loveys, I'm back. I'm sure you've wondered what the heck was up with me. Damn, I was wondering that myself. I fielded a few concerned calls, "What's up with the blog? You okay?" The answer to that is, yes and no.
You ever just kind of fall into a weird funk where every day feels the same, nothing interesting or fun seems to happen, you can't even seem to work up any interest for things you used to enjoy? Life had just fallen into a rut of sorts. Not that that's bad, heck I'm sure many people only wish to have a safe, routine rut instead of worry, uncertainty, and upheaval. So in a way I'm thankful to have that rut, I do appreciate what I've been given in this life. But sometimes... I just have these little funks that I fall into. I would tell myself, I should work on the blog, but what was there to write about? The kids were all okay, hockey had ended (I did briefly consider doing a post on that but what was there to say besides, "Yay"), Ty was working at home and away. I was just in sort of this mental freeze. No motivation to eat healthy or work out or stop smoking, even though I'd done that post on resolutions. (I HAVE been an excellent wife though, I must admit, haha).
I remember at our Christmas get-together with the Kasha side, wearing a new shirt I'd bought and my jeans were loose, I felt great and healthy and proud. I did the resolution post and was hopeful for the new year, new beginnings. And then... I don't know. I just sort of lost that. The battery on my scale died and it was almost a relief, no weighing myself every morning and obsessing over every pound lost or gained. If I wanted to eat a few cookies at midnight, who cared. Working out became something that I'd do "tomorrow". And we all know how that always turns out. I put on that Christmas outfit a while back and the jeans were tight and the shirt felt uncomfortable and I was disgusted with myself but even that wasn't enough to break out of the rut.
Is that what you'd call a bout of depression? I know it runs in the family, I'm certain there are shades of it in there somewhere. Yet I don't feel like that term applies to me, at least not in the broader sense of my daily life. Sure some things bring me down, usually something that would be considered shallow, such as a skin breakout or the whole weight issue. Which is so ridiculous, really. Why should I deserve to feel depressed about something so stupid when there are people out there with legitimate reasons for feeling depressed, loss and pain and confusion of a deep level. Then again, my emotions and feelings are real to ME, therefore no less justified. Do you ever feel that you should have no right to feel a certain way? There's that 'forward this on' email that goes around from time to time about counting your blessings, "The next time you're angry at your boss, remember the person who's been unemployed and is desperate for work", etc. The same line of thinking as never having a fight with your spouse in case that's the last time you see them. But... then you're leading a half life, not allowing yourself to have those normal feelings of anger, frustration, grief, what have you, almost like by denying them you're being a better person. Maybe that's true to a degree. But a person should never deny themselves those moods or emotions because then you're not living in the moment. In denying yourself that full spectrum of emotion and feeling, its like you're putting a judgement on yourself. 'A good person wouldn't think this way', well dammit, who can be a 'good' person 100% of the time. And who would want to? We're not meant to be Pollyannas.
And so I had my big long funk, wallowing in that rut, and just let myself feel it and process those emotions. And then a couple days ago, Wednesday actually, I woke up and it just felt different. The quality of light in my bedroom seemed different, brighter somehow. I could see dust motes floating in a ray of sunlight through the blinds and instead of thinking 'I need to clean my room, I'm a horrid housekeeper' and starting that whole circular depressive line of thinking, I just saw the simple beauty of it. Tiny specks floating in air, uncaring of where they landed, something sprung from ugliness (dust-mite poop, for gods sake), and yet it is what it is. There's a kind of simplistic lesson in there, I think. We are who we are, no more no less. Not to say we can't change and grow and become different, and there's nothing wrong with that. Change is great. Essential, really. But those moments of going-with-the-flow, allowing ourselves to live in the moment and really claim and embrace where we are right now, no guilt, no feelings of inadequacy or hopelessness, just living it... That is a true life-lesson as well.
So I sprung out of bed, went through the same morning routine, making lunches and breakfast and laundry. But I could feel a lightness in my step, a feeling of wanting to move forward, shake myself up a bit. And when Ryder went for his nap that day, I popped in my Turbo Jam, and I was ready for that workout, man. I gave it 110% and though I was red and sweaty and huffing, I felt great and energized. And surprisingly, thanks to that amazing thing called muscle memory, it wasn't the ordeal I'd been dreading and expecting. I made it through the entire 45 minutes without having to stop (though that 2-minute Turbo was a killer). And I was friggin' proud of myself. Felt great. So while there may be more moments of funk in my future, just knowing that I can move forward and I have, gives me motivation.
So here I am. Back in the land of the living. I've missed you guys and I'll be seeing you again soon.
(PS. I will admit that Thursday I was a stiff, sore mess of knotted back muscles and strained triceps, but even that pain was a badge of honor I suffered through happily. Well, maybe not happily, I had to take a muscle-relaxant that night, but you know what I mean, lol.)

Try this cough syrup!
I picked up a new kind of cough syrup, its homeopathic (made entirely from plants), from Value Drug Mart here in Sylvan. It cost about $7-8, comparable and even a bit cheaper than other name-brand syrups. Its super-powerful and effective, so children aged 0-6 only need 1/2 tsp, 7-11 is 1 tsp, and 12+ is 1 tbsp. As symptoms improve, dosage intake can be reduced. This product contains no antihistamine ingredients, which makes it surprisingly potent.
I had bought it before, months ago when the kids were all sick, and I remembered Lena saying it didn't have "a taste". And it worked really great, too; cleared the sickness up within a couple of days.
Poor Lena has been sick with a persistent cough and cold for the past week, and flat-out refused to take any medicine that "tastes like poison", which is basically every kind of cough syrup and chewable pills out there, regardless of 'fast-melting action' or cherry, grape and orange flavors. She threatened to punch me if I even mentioned Oil of Oregano (one experience was enough for her, thankyouverymuch), and the peroxide-in-the-ear trick really only works if you catch the sickness in the early stages. So I've been a little desperate about what to give her to help ease the painful hacking cough, non-stop runny/stuffy nose, and the chest congestion.
Then, on a trip to Value Drug Mart to find something to help her, I came across the box of Phytotux and like a flash of lightning, her little voice "It has no taste" ran through my head. Yesss! Brought it home to her and she piped up, "I remember this stuff! Thank you Mom, thank you!" and to my utter astonishment, she gulped her dose down in one swallow. Giving her any other medication was an hour-long process: first, ten minutes of threatening, bribing and flat-out pleading to pleeeaasseee drink it; then her grudging acceptance but warnings of "I don't know about this!"; then standing there and watching her for like twenty minutes as she lifted the little medicine cup to her mouth, then put it back down, then back up again, and repeat; then, finally, watching her gather her courage, face screwed up in a grimace, taking teensy-tiny sips, shuddering and gagging after each one, whining and complaining "I can't do it again! Don't make me!"; until eventually, an hour later, the full dose was swallowed. And then lastly, of course, listening to her angry tirade of "I can't believe you made me drink that! It tastes like POISON! My throat is burning! Its all I can taste! I'm never drinking that again!"
So you can imagine my relief at finding this wonder syrup that she gulped down in seconds.

Hydrogen Peroxide: Did you know?? (UPDATE)
2ND UPDATE: Okay, so Aunt Stephanie commented on facebook that she and Uncle Kirk have been doing H202 therapy for a while now and they feel amazing. What a relief, to hear from someone with first-hand knowledge, someone I know and trust, that this stuff really works. Hey, if its good enough for the 'Witch Doctor', its good enough for me. (But I'd still suggest people do research and know what they're getting into!)
UPDATE: One of my facebook friends, who is a nurse, pointed out to me (after I posted a status praising H202 therapy) that I should really do a lot of in-depth, reputable research before trying this, as H202 can be very dangerous at higher percentages. I knew this from reading that article, but I did what she said and researched a bit more. It IS a little scary to read that H202 can melt the skin right off your body! When handling the 35% food-grade peroxide, one has to wear protective glasses, gloves, be in a well-ventilated room, ALONE, making sure not to spill even one drop. And that if you don't get the dilution-concentration just right, it can result in brain damage, ulcers, damage of the esophageal and stomach linings, and many more not-nice things. So I felt a little irresponsible, doing a blog post making it seem like a miracle-drug without fully listing all the 'cons'. In doing my research, I did come across many first-hand accounts of how H202 therapy does help (one guy in particular used it to treat cluster headaches and they disappeared within days). But I would definitely, HIGHLY recommend you do the research as well if interested and make your decision based on your own opinions, not just what you've read here on the blog.
Lena came home from school yesterday complaining of a splitting headache. When asked how long she'd had it for, she said "All day." Poor little girl suffered with it all day at school and didn't say a word to her teacher! I would have picked her up in an instant. But anyway, I gave her a couple of children's Tylenol and a cold cloth for her forehead and she laid on the couch in a nest. I checked on her and she had a raging fever! Soon after came the sore throat. I thought to myself, Uh oh. This is how the H1N1 started last year, severe headache, fever, sore throat, next comes the stomach cramps. And sure enough, within half an hour she had a wicked stomach ache. She was just in misery. The tylenol wasn't working, the fever was raging, and her headache just got worse. She could barely swallow, her throat hurt so bad. And the cramps had her groaning in pain every few minutes. I braced myself for dealing with whatever strain of flu this was, riding it out over the weekend, and praying no one else would pick it up.
About an hour later, after listening to her groans and sobs of pain, out of sheer desperation I started google searching. And lo and behold, came across the video above. Went down to the laundry room to get the bottle of peroxide (its the only thing I use for stain removal), there was just barely enough left to do what the doctor suggested: pour one capful into the ear (with head laying sideways on a pillow), let it sit for 2 minutes, then repeat with the other ear. I was sceptical, but hopeful. And to see the nonstop bubbling action going on, I knew something had to be happening.
Results were not instant. In fact, I didn't think it was going to work at all. By that time the tylenol had worn off (not that it helped with the pain or fever anyway) and she flat-out refused to take more. So I settled her on the couch watching a show. After about 45 minutes, I asked how she was feeling. "Way better!" She was surprised. Sure enough, I felt her forehead... fever gone. Asked about the headache and sore throat... gone. Stomach cramps... gone. It was like a miracle! Any experience I've had with the flu, in myself and others, is that once it starts there's no stopping it until its run its course. So this was just amazing. She woke up this morning (after a full night's sleep, which never happens when they're sick, its always 'Mooommmmmyyy' every ten minutes, am I right?) and she was completely fine! I was, and am, dumbfounded.
I have no idea how or why this simple trick works, what the science is behind it, but I'm just floored. And so I did some google research and look at what I found:

When exposed to other compounds hydrogen peroxide dismutates readily. The extra oxygen atom is released leaving H20 (water). In nature oxygen (02) consists of two atoms--a very stable combination. A single atom of oxygen, however, is very reactive and is referred to as a free radical. Over the past several years, we've continually read that these free radicals are responsible for all types of ailments and even premature aging. What many writers seem to forget, however, is that our bodies create and use free radicals to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In fact, the cells responsible for fighting infection and foreign invaders in the body (your white blood cells) make hydrogen peroxide and use it to oxidize any offending culprits. The intense bubbling you see when hydrogen peroxide comes in contact with a bacteria-laden cut or wound is the oxygen being released and bacteria being destroyed. The ability of our cells to produce hydrogen peroxide is essential for life. H202 is not some undesirable by-product or toxin, but instead a basic requirement for good health.
Newer research indicates we need hydrogen peroxide for a multitude of other chemical reactions that take place throughout the body. For example, we now know that vitamin C helps fight infections by producing hydrogen peroxide, which in turn stimulates the production of prostaglandins. Also lactobacillus found in the colon and vagina produce hydrogen peroxide. This destroys harmful bacteria and viruses, preventing colon disease, vaginitis, bladder infections and a host of other common ailments. (Infect Dis News Aug.8,91:5). When lactobacillus in the colon or vaginal tract have been overrun with harmful viruses, yeast, or bacteria, an effective douche or enema solution can be made using 3 tablespoons of 3% H202 in 1 quart of distilled water. Keep in mind, however, that a good bacterial flora must always be re-established in theses areas to achieve lasting results.
While we are discussing enemas and douches, there is another misconception about H202 I need to address. The friendly bacteria in the colon and vagina are aerobic. In other words, they flourish in high oxygen environments and thrive in the presence of oxygen rich H202. On the other hand, most strains of harmful bacteria (and cancer cells) are anaerobic and cannot survive in the presence of oxygen or H202.
Let's look at several conditions that seem to respond especially well to H202 therapy. First, keep in mind that there are two methods of administering the peroxide-1) orally and 2) intravenously. While most conditions respond remarkably to oral ingestion, emphysema is one condition in which intravenous infusion can be a godsend. Emphysema involves destruction of the alveoli (the small air sacs in the lungs). Although chemical fumes and other irritants can cause the destruction, it is most often the result of smoking. As the disease progresses, the patient finds it more and more difficult to breathe. A wheel chair and supplemental oxygen become necessary as the disease progresses. Lack of adequate oxygen reaching the tissues forces the heart to pump more forcefully. This leads to high blood pressure, enlargement of the heart itself and eventually heart failure. Conventional medicine offers little help for emphysema. There is no cure. The best that can be hoped for is symptomatic relief and the prevention of any serious complications that might result in death. H202 therapy can offer more. Using 1 ounce of 35% peroxide per 1 gallon of non-chlorinated water in a vaporizer improves nighttime breathing tremendously. But intravenous infusion holds the real key to relief. It has the ability to cleanse the inner lining of the lungs and restore the ability to breathe.
We continue to hear the same story from Dr. Farr and others who use intravenous infusion for emphysema and congestive lung problems. Within minutes oxygen from hydrogen peroxide begins to bubble up between the membrane lining the lungs sacs and the accumulated mucus. (Dr. Farr refers to this as the "Alka-Seltzer effect.") The patient begins to cough and expel the material that has accumulated in the lungs. The amount of bubbling, coughing, and cleansing can be regulated by simply turning the H202 on and off. As the peroxide clears the lung surface and destroys the bacterial infections, the patient regains the ability to breath more normally. We continue to receive reports from patients for whom the technique has improved breathing so much that a wheelchair and supplemental oxygen are no longer needed.
If emphysema were the only ailment successfully treated with H202 therapy, it would still rank as one of the top health discoveries of all time. Fortunately, H202 works wonders on a multitude of health problems. It does so by increasing tissue oxygen levels. A closer look at how we have decreased the availability of external and internal oxygen, will show you just how important this can be.
It's obvious that our oxygen needs are not being met. Several of the most common ailments now affecting our population are directly related to oxygen starvation. Asthma, emphysema, and lung disease are on the rise, especially in the polluted metropolitan areas. Cases of constipation, diarrhea, intestinal parasites and bowel cancer are all on the upswing. Periodontal disease is endemic in the adult population of this country. Cancer of all forms continues to increase. Immune system disorders are sweeping the globe. Chronic fatigue, "Yuppie Flu" and hundreds of other strange viral diseases have begun to surface. Ironically, many of the new "miracle" drugs and nutritional supplements used to treat these conditions work by increasing cellular oxygen (oftentimes through H202 formation). For example, the miracle nutrient, Coenzyme Q10, helps regulate intercellular oxidation. Organic germanium, which received considerable publicity not too long ago, also increases oxygen levels at the cellular level. And even substances like niacin and vitamin E promote tissue oxidation through their dilation of blood vessels.

Grades of Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is available in various strengths and grades.
A) 3.5% Pharmaceutical Grade: This is the grade sold at your local drugstore or supermarket. This product is not recommended for internal use. It contains an assortment of stabilizers which shouldn't be ingested. Various stabilizers include: acetanilide, phenol, sodium stanate and tertrasodium phosphate.
B) 6% Beautician Grade: This is used in beauty shops to color hair and is not recommended for internal use.
C) 30% Reagent Grade: This is used for various scientific experimentation and also contains stabilizers. It is also not for internal use.
D) 30% to 32% Electronic Grade: This is used to clean electronic parts and not for internal use.
E) 35% Technical Grade: This is a more concentrated product than the Reagent Grade and differs slightly in that phosphorus is added to help neutralize any chlorine from the water used to dilute it.
F) 35% Food Grade: This is used in the production of foods like cheese, eggs, and whey-containing products. It is also sprayed on the foil lining of aseptic packages containing fruit juices and milk products. THIS IS THE ONLY GRADE RECOMMENDED FOR INTERNAL USE. It is available in pints, quarts, gallons or even drums.
G) 90%: This is used as an oxygen source for rocket fuel.
Only 35% Food Grade hydrogen peroxide is recommended for internal use. At this concentration, however, hydrogen peroxide is a very strong oxidizer and if not diluted, it can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. Any concentrations over 10% can cause neurological reactions and damage to the upper gastrointestinal tract. There have been two known fatalities in children who ingested 27% and 40% concentrations of H202. Recently, a 26 month old female swallowed one mouthful of 35% H202. She immediately began vomiting, followed by fainting and respiratory arrest. Fortunately, she was under emergency room care and although she experienced erosion and bleeding of the stomach and esophagus, she survived the incident. When she was re-examined 12 days later, the areas involved had healed (J Toxicol Clin Toxicol 90;28(1):95-100).
35% Food Grade H202 must be
1) handled carefully (direct contact will burn the skin--immediate flushing with water is recommended).
2) diluted properly before use.
3) stored safely and properly (after making a dilution the remainder should be stored tightly sealed in the freezer).
One of the most convenient methods of dispensing 35% H202 is from a small glass eye dropper bottle. These can be purchased at your local drugstore. Fill this with the 35% H202 and store the larger container in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator until more is needed. Store the eye dropper bottle in the refrigerator. The generally recommended dosage is outlined in the chart below. The drops are mixed with either 6 to 8 ounces of distilled water, juice, milk or even aloe vera juice or gel. (Don't use chlorinated tap water to dilute the peroxide!)
Suggested Protocol
The program outlined is only a suggestion, but it is based on years of experience, and reports from thousands of users. Those who choose to go at a slower pace can expect to progress more slowly, but that certainly is an option. The program is not carved in stone and keep in mind that it can be adapted to fit individual needs. Individuals who have had transplants should not undertake an H202 program. H202 stimulates the immune system and could possibly cause a rejection of the organ.

Maintenance Dosage
In most situations after the above 21 day program, the amount of H202 can be tapered off gradually as follows:
25 drops once every other day for 1 week
25 drops once every third day for 2 weeks
25 drops once every fourth day for 3 weeks
This can then be reduced to between 5 and 15 drops per week based on how one feels. Those with more serious problems will often benefit from staying on 25 drops three times a day for one to three weeks, then tapering down to 25 drops two times daily until the problem is resolved (possibly as long as six months). Those with chronic systemic Candidiasis may need to start with 1 drop three times a day, then 2 drops three times a day before starting the above schedule. It is important that H202 be taken on an empty stomach. This is best accomplished by taking it either one hour before meals or three hours after meals. If there is food in the stomach, the reaction of H202 on any bacteria present may cause excess foaming, indigestion, and possibly even vomiting. Additionally, some animal research indicates that when H202 given orally combines with iron and small amounts of vitamin C in the stomach, hydroxyl radicals are created (J Inorg Biochem 89;35(1):55-69). The bleach-like aftertaste of H202 can be lessened by chewing one of the sugar-free cinnamon gums. Some individuals taking H202 immediately before bedtime have a difficult time getting to sleep. This is probably due to a sense of alertness triggered by an increase of oxygen at the cellular level. The oral dosage schedule is basically the same for all conditions. There are several points to keep in mind, however.
Some individuals may experience upset stomach. If this occurs it is recommended that one not stop the program, but rather remain at the current dosage level or reduce it to the previous level until the problem stops. (Some patients have been able to solve the nausea problem by taking three or four lecithin capsules at the same time they take the H202.) During the program it's not uncommon to experience what is known as a healing crisis. As dead bacteria and toxins are released from your body it may temporarily exceed your capacity to eliminate them quickly enough. In some individuals this overload may cause fatigue, diarrhea, headaches, skin eruptions, cold or flu-like symptoms, and/or nausea. One should not discontinue using the peroxide to stop this cleansing. By continuing the program, toxins will clear the body sooner and this healing crisis will pass rather quickly.
If you are not already taking vitamin E and an acidophilus product, I recommend starting them before going on H202. Vitamin E can make more efficient use of any oxygen available and acidophilus will help re-establish the beneficial bacterial flora in the lower bowel and also help in the internal production of hydrogen peroxide.
Making and Using 3% Solutions of H202
A 3.5% solution can be made quite easily by first pouring 1 ounce of 35% H202 into a pint jar. To this add 11 ounces of distilled water. This will make 12 ounces of 3.5% H202. 3.5% H202 has a variety of medicinal uses.
1. Three tablespoons mixed with a quart of non-chlorinated water makes a good enema or douche formula.
2. It can be used full strength as a mouthwash or mixed with baking soda for toothpaste.
3. It can be used full strength as a foot bath for athlete's foot. (Diabetics have found relief from circulation problems by soaking their feet in 1 pint of 3% peroxide mixed with 1 gallon of warm, non-chlorinated water for 30 minutes nightly.)
4. A tablespoon added to 1 cup of non-chlorinated water can be used as a nasal spray. Depending on the degree of sinus involvement, one will have to adjust the amount of peroxide used. I have seen some who can use it at the full 3% strength and others who had difficulty with using a few drops and mixed with a cup of water.
5. 3.5% H202 can be added to pets drinking water at the rate of 1 ounce per quart of non-chlorinated water. Sick cattle reportedly benefit from 1 pint (of 3%) to each 5 gallons of water. (Chickens and cows have remained healthy by using 8 ounces of 35% H202 per 1,000 gallons of drinking water.)

Top 10 Food Contamination Culprits

According to a report by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest, food contamination sickens millions of Americans every year. The report ranks the top 10 riskiest foods regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) based on reported cases of foodborne illness from 1990 to 2006. The riskiest food is not raw hamburger, as you might suspect, but rather leafy green vegetables, which were associated with 363 outbreaks of foodborne illness. "Consumers need to know about the risks, but they also need to know we have the safest food supply in the world," says Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, clinical associate professor at Boston University in Massachusetts.
SPINACH AND OTHER LEAFY GREENS
You may remember the 2006 outbreak of foodborne illness from bagged spinach that was contaminated with the E. coli bacteria. Leafy greens account for almost 30 percent of all foodborne illnesses in foods regulated by the FDA. "The problem with leafy greens is that we eat them raw, so they really need to be washed before eating. But contamination can occur in the home as well as on the farm. Make sure you don't wash meats and greens in the same sink or cut them on the same counter. And watch out for meat dripping down into your refrigerator's vegetable bin," warns Blake.
EGGS
Next on the list of risky foods are eggs, which have been linked to 352 outbreaks of foodborne illness. Food contamination in eggs is almost always due to the bacteria salmonella. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that for every reported case of salmonella, 38 cases go unreported. You might be wondering how those bacteria get inside an egg. The most prevalent type of salmonella infects the ovaries of hens that lay the eggs. "The best way to protect yourself is to cook your eggs so they are not soft or runny," says Blake.
TUNA
Tuna is No. 3 on the list with 268 reported outbreaks of illness. The big problem with tuna is not mercury, but a naturally occurring toxin called scombrotoxin. This toxin can build up in tuna flesh if it is not kept cold enough after the fish has been caught and, unfortunately, you can't get rid of it even by cooking. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and palpitations.
RAW OYSTERS
Coming in at No. 4 with 132 outbreaks are oysters. "Oysters are another risky food because people want to eat them raw," notes Blake. Most oyster outbreaks are traced to restaurants. Two microbes, known as norovirus and vibrio, cause most of the foodborne illnesses from oysters. The vibrio organism is the more dangerous. It is closely related to the bacterium that causes cholera, an acute intestinal infection. Oysters can be contaminated from the water they grown in or by improper handling.
THE COMMON POTATO
You would think this American staple would be safe because almost no one eats raw potatoes. The food safety issue here, linked to 108 outbreaks, usually involves potato salad. Salmonella is the main problem again. More than 40 percent of potato outbreaks can be traced back to restaurants and delis where cross contamination has occurred. Salmonella usually causes mild cramps and diarrhea, but in severe cases can cause kidney failure.
SOFT CHEESE DURING PREGNANCY
Cheese is at No. 6 on the list with 83 outbreaks. Pasteurization makes cheese safer, but many cheeses are not pasteurized. Recently consumers in California were warned about the danger of bacterial food contamination in some Latin American cheeses made with unpasteurized milk. Pregnant women may be in danger from soft cheeses like feta, Brie, and Camembert because they are more likely to be infected with the organism listeria. The CDC says that pregnant women are 20 times more likely than others to be infected by listeria and recommends that they avoid soft cheeses. Although listeria infection may be mild in most people, it can cause a miscarriage in a pregnant woman.
ICE CREAM
Associated with 75 outbreaks, ice cream is No. 7 on the list. Salmonella and staphylococcus bacteria can cause food contamination in ice cream. In 1994, an ice cream-linked outbreak of salmonella sickened thousands of people across 41 states. Soft ice cream, like soft cheeses, may contain listeria and could be hazardous for pregnant women. "Ice cream food contamination may be more common in homemade ice cream due to raw eggs," warns Blake.
TOMATOES
In both 2005 and 2006, tomato contamination with salmonella was big news as hundreds of people became sick across the country. Salmonella can enter a tomato through the soil by way of the plant's root system. Tomatoes can also be contaminated by bacteria or norovirus through cracks in the skin during handling or preparation in a restaurant. Once the tomato has been infected, the only way to avoid foodborne illness is by cooking it.
RAW BEAN AND SEED SPROUTS
Sprouts are increasingly popular in salad bars and in the American diet in general. This food, which is the germinating form of seeds and beans, grows best in a warm and moist environment. Unfortunately, E. coli and salmonella thrive in the same environment. There have been 31 outbreaks of foodborne illness due to sprouts. The FDA has been urged to place warning labels on raw sprouts.
BERRIES
Cyclospora is a type of parasite that you get when the eggs of the parasite cause food contamination. Raspberries from South America have caused outbreaks. Hepatitis A, a virus that affects the liver, has also been a berry food safety problem. In 1997, 2.6 million pounds of strawberries were recalled because of hepatitis A virus contamination. Berries, linked with 25 food contamination outbreaks since 1990, round out the list of top 10 risky foods.
THE BOTTOM LINE ON FOOD CONTAMINATION
Legislation is now working its way through Congress to strengthen the FDA food safety program. "Food safety is everybody's responsibility," says Blake, "including the FDA, growers, shippers, handlers, and consumers. The best way to protect yourself is with the four C’s: clean, cook, combat cross contamination, and chill. Don't shy away from fresh produce. It's an important part of your diet. Just use the fifth C — common sense."
Top 10 Things That Cause Bad Breath

If you're constantly popping mints or chewing gum to cover up bad breath, also known as halitosis, you're not alone. Many people have halitosis for a variety of reasons. Most cases of halitosis are caused by improper dental hygiene. If you don't brush and floss your teeth after every meal, bits of food that get stuck in your teeth and gums and on your tongue will begin to decay and emit foul odors.
An unclean mouth also means that bacteria can grow, potentially leading to gum disease, which is also one of the causes of bad breath. In addition, certain foods and drink are more likely to cause bad breath, including:
Other Causes of Bad Breath
Chronic diseases. Sometimes underlying health conditions can cause bad breath. Lung infections, cancers, kidney or liver failure, diabetes, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), for example, are all associated with halitosis.
Respiratory, mouth, throat, and nose conditions. These conditions are also often associated with bad breath. For example, discharge from a sinus infection is known to cause bad breath. If you have an upper respiratory infection such as bronchitis, the sputum coughed up can also cause halitosis.
Tobacco products, particularly smoking. Tobacco products can dry your mouth and result in bad breath. People who use tobacco are also at greater risk of developing gum disease, poor general oral health, and oral cancers.
Malnutrition. Starvation or intense dieting can result in bad breath due to ketoacidosis, which is a breakdown of chemicals that occurs during fasting.
Beating Bad Breath
To combat bad breath, try the following:
If you still feel like you have bad breath after trying these tips, ask someone who is close to you for confirmation. Sometimes, you really are your own worst critic. If it is indeed an issue, make an appointment with your dentist to try to uncover what could be causing your bad breath.
Avoid drinking, eating, chewing gum, or brushing your teeth before your dental appointment. Skip the perfume or other scented products too, so that your dentist can truly assess your halitosis. Your dentist will likely ask you a number of questions, ranging from your dental hygiene habits to your general health.
In some cases, halitosis may be due to a buildup of plaque, which is a layer of bacteria on your teeth. If this is the case, the dentist may have you use a special antimicrobial mouth rinse.
If your dentist determines that the bad breath is due to gum disease, you'll be treated or referred to a gum disease doctor, called a periodontist. Also called periodontal disease, gum disease causes your gums to recede from the teeth and leaves pockets that gather bacteria and plaque. A periodontal cleaning, or more extensive treatment, may be needed.
If your dentist isn't able to uncover the reason for your bad breath, a trip to your primary care doctor for a physical exam would be the next step to determine the underlying causes of your bad breath.
Top 10 Foods That Boost Healthy Skin

"The skin is the window to the entire body,” says dermatologist Joely Kaufman-Janette, MD, assistant professor and director of the Aging and Geriatric Skin Center at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. “Part of choosing a diet for good looking skin is just eating to keep yourself healthy because your health is reflected through your skin.” Many of the nutrients and “good” fats we eat as part of a healthy diet enhance the skin’s elasticity and help create the appealing glow of healthy skin. Eat well and avoid foods high in saturated fat, says Dr. Kaufman-Janette, and you’ll see how it can result in good skin.
BLUEBERRIES
Antioxidants help fight the signs of aging skin, and blueberries are a great source. Rich in vitamin C, blueberries can play a healthy role in an otherwise decadent dessert and taste great as a cereal topping and tossed into salads. Other sources of antioxidants that you can include in your healthy diet are red wine and dark chocolate. Kaufman-Janette also offers this tip: Eating fruits and veggies in their fresh, raw form provides more antioxidants than when cooked.
FISH
Fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids should be part of a healthy skin diet. “Omega-3s are a great source of oil for the skin without clogging the pores,” says Kaufman-Janette, clarifying that omega-3s must be eaten or taken as supplements. Many people try to cut all fats from their diet, but without some fat, your skin may suffer. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered healthy fats, and a diet that is too low in healthy fats can lead to “dull, dry skin,” she warns.
WHOLE WHEAT
Think of whole-wheat bread and other whole-grain products as smart food for your skin — they’re a healthy alternative to refined white bread or pasta, says Kaufman-Janette. “The white breads and white pastas create a spike in insulin, which isn’t good for your skin,” she explains. Whole grains are also packed with fiber, which promotes healthy digestion, and Kaufman-Janette points out that digestive problems are often reflected in unhealthy skin.
WATER
“There are molecules in the skin that actually bind water,” explains Kaufman-Janette. “Your skin will not be as plump if you are dehydrated.” Skin also becomes dry when it loses too much water, so you need to drink plenty of liquids to replace daily water loss. Water is also a good alternative to sugary beverages that could negatively affect your skin by causing insulin levels to rise and fall dramatically.
GREEN TEA
Green tea has two benefits for your skin: It contains antioxidants, which may fight the effects of aging, and drinking it is a good way to stay hydrated. When given the option, choose green tea over beverages that don’t promote skin health. This is one of Kaufman-Janette’s recommended strategies for healthy skin — and overall health. She says, “If you can substitute a good choice at every single meal for a bad choice, you’ll start to look and feel healthier.”
LOW-FAT YOGURT
Yogurt is often recommended for a healthy diet because it contains probiotics, or “healthy” bacteria, which are beneficial for digestive health. “Yogurt may help ease digestive troubles, which can improve related skin conditions such as rosacea or skin inflammation,” says Kaufman-Janette, who recommends that people with these skin conditions include yogurt in their healthy diet plan. Probiotics are increasingly used in skin care lines, but she cautions that these may not be the same bacteria that are found in yogurt.
SWEET POTATOES
Sweet potatoes give you a healthy dose of vitamin A, which has been found to help reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging. There are several topical creams on the market that contain vitamin A, but Kaufman-Janette cautions against using too many of these skin products, which can be drying and irritating. It’s better to include sweet potatoes and other foods rich in vitamin A as part of a healthy diet.
BROCCOLI
Broccoli and other green vegetables are great for the skin. The richer the color of veggies and fruits, the more likely they are to contain the nutrients you need for a healthy diet. “Darker is better,” Kaufman-Janette stresses. Darker broccoli florets provide more vitamins A and C, and both of these vitamins help fight fine lines and wrinkles.
AVOCADOS
Avocados are rich in healthy fats, vitamins A and C, and fiber, make them an almost perfect healthy food that enhances your complexion and fight aging skin. Avocado is also a common ingredient in homemade or natural skin masks, but Kaufman-Janette says you are better off putting avocado in your salad than on your face. “Masks with avocado can cause clogged pores,” she says. “Definitely avoid them if you are acne prone.”
VITAMIN D
Vitamin D isn’t found naturally in the diet, but it is important for healthy skin, especially as people age, says Kaufman-Janette. People usually get Vitamin D through sun exposure, but if you live in a less sunny area or stay inside a lot, you need to get it through your diet. You can drink vitamin D-enriched beverages, eat foods fortified with vitamin D, or take a supplement in order to help slow the aging process on your skin.
10 Ways to Fight Fatigue

If you suffer from a chronic disease like rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or depression, you may be sick and tired of feeling tired. Fatigue may also be due to a lack of exercise, too much stress, or trouble sleeping. In any case, if you find yourself fighting fatigue, you are not alone. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints that bring people to their doctor’s office. Here's how to fight fatigue with some simple lifestyle changes.
START BY SEEING YOUR DOCTOR
Your doctor will evaluate your condition and order tests, as necessary. "If you suffer from chronic fatigue, the first step is to see a doctor to rule out a treatable medical problem such as anemia,” advises Elizabeth Araujo, MD, a rheumatologist at the University of Cincinnati. “If you have a chronic condition like fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis, work with your doctor to make sure your disease is being treated and controlled properly.” Get the appropriate blood work and make sure you are not having any reaction to a medication.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP
Fatigue can be one of the most difficult aspects of living with a chronic illness. “Sleep that is deep and restorative and in the range of seven to eight hours a night is ideal to help replenish important neurochemicals like natural endorphins [pain modulators] and serotonins. Sleep also allows joints and muscle to heal and rest," explains Rochelle Rosian, MD, a rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
AIM FOR MORE RESTFUL SLEEP
If you want to get refreshing sleep that helps you feel less tired when you wake up, plan your evenings carefully. "Avoid big meals, caffeine, alcohol, and television before bedtime," suggests Dr. Araujo. You should also avoid caffeine late in the day. And keep in mind that while a nightcap may help you fall asleep, it’s likely to cause you to wake up later and distract you from a restful night. Finally, consider going to bed earlier so that you can wake up earlier and ease into your day at a more leisurely pace.
EXERCISE FOR ENERGY AND TO HELP YOU SLEEP
Regular exercise not only boosts your energy, it makes it easier for you to fall asleep at night. "Engage in daily low-level exercise, such as gentle stretching and walking. Exercise will help with stress and improve sleep, as well as help maintain strength, balance, and flexibility," says Dr. Rosian. The best time to exercise to fight fatigue is early in the day. Avoid exercising in the evening because the stimulation of exercise can interfere with sleep.
EAT WELL
A nutritious diet can help energize you throughout the day. A diet high in fruit, vegetables, and grains is best, with moderation in other food groups including dairy, meat, and oils. “It's important to remember that an ideal body weight is best for the weight-bearing joints, especially the knees, feet, and ankles,” says Rosian. "I’m not a big fan of fad diets. I believe that moderation is critical when it comes to diet and exercise."
STEP INTO SUNLIGHT
One way to fight fatigue is to pay attention to your internal clock. Sunlight tells your brain and body when to get active. For some people the winter months can be the hardest time to fight fatigue due to short days and lack of sunshine. Besides bundling up and getting outside, fight winter fatigue by arranging your home and office environment to allow for maximum sun exposure. Aim for at least 30 minutes of sunlight every day.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Obesity has been called an epidemic in America, and it’s affecting young people as well as adults — one-third of children between 2 and 19 are overweight or obese. Being overweight is not just bad for your body and your self-esteem, it’s also bad for sleeping patterns. Being overweight has been shown to contribute to sleep disorders and to low energy levels. Fight fatigue by cutting back on calories, especially sugary beverages and other sweets, and increasing your exercise level. If you’re concerned about your — or your child’s — weight, talk to your doctor about creating a weight-loss plan.
MANAGE STRESS
One of the most common causes of fatigue is stress. The way you respond to stress can make a difference in the effect it has on you. Even if you can't avoid stress in your life, try to deal with it in a constructive way. Learning relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, tai chi, and self-hypnosis will lessen stress and keep those tired feeling at bay. "A daily walk or a yoga class can also help you reduce your stress, control your weight, and fight fatigue," advises Araujo.
TRY AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy uses the essential oils from plants and other sources to lessen the effects of stress and promote well-being. The oil is usually either rubbed into your skin or inhaled. Some laboratory studies performed on animals support the effectiveness of essential oils in promoting energy. Essential oils, such as those made from geranium, lavender, and cedarwood, may send chemical messages to your brain that improve your mood and cause you to feel more relaxed and energized.
BE GOOD TO YOURSELF
If you have a debilitating disease like rheumatoid arthritis or chronic fatigue syndrome, or if you have just been pushing yourself too hard, you need to accept feeling a certain amount of fatigue. Getting frustrated and angry about being tired only worsens fatigue. Consider making accommodations in your work schedule, or at least counter some of the time spent at work with activities that bring you joy and satisfaction — compromise and balance are necessary. "People who stick to a sensible schedule and a regular regimen do better at fighting fatigue in the long run," says Rosian.

According to a report by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest, food contamination sickens millions of Americans every year. The report ranks the top 10 riskiest foods regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) based on reported cases of foodborne illness from 1990 to 2006. The riskiest food is not raw hamburger, as you might suspect, but rather leafy green vegetables, which were associated with 363 outbreaks of foodborne illness. "Consumers need to know about the risks, but they also need to know we have the safest food supply in the world," says Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, clinical associate professor at Boston University in Massachusetts.
SPINACH AND OTHER LEAFY GREENS
You may remember the 2006 outbreak of foodborne illness from bagged spinach that was contaminated with the E. coli bacteria. Leafy greens account for almost 30 percent of all foodborne illnesses in foods regulated by the FDA. "The problem with leafy greens is that we eat them raw, so they really need to be washed before eating. But contamination can occur in the home as well as on the farm. Make sure you don't wash meats and greens in the same sink or cut them on the same counter. And watch out for meat dripping down into your refrigerator's vegetable bin," warns Blake.
EGGS
Next on the list of risky foods are eggs, which have been linked to 352 outbreaks of foodborne illness. Food contamination in eggs is almost always due to the bacteria salmonella. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that for every reported case of salmonella, 38 cases go unreported. You might be wondering how those bacteria get inside an egg. The most prevalent type of salmonella infects the ovaries of hens that lay the eggs. "The best way to protect yourself is to cook your eggs so they are not soft or runny," says Blake.
TUNA
Tuna is No. 3 on the list with 268 reported outbreaks of illness. The big problem with tuna is not mercury, but a naturally occurring toxin called scombrotoxin. This toxin can build up in tuna flesh if it is not kept cold enough after the fish has been caught and, unfortunately, you can't get rid of it even by cooking. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and palpitations.
RAW OYSTERS
Coming in at No. 4 with 132 outbreaks are oysters. "Oysters are another risky food because people want to eat them raw," notes Blake. Most oyster outbreaks are traced to restaurants. Two microbes, known as norovirus and vibrio, cause most of the foodborne illnesses from oysters. The vibrio organism is the more dangerous. It is closely related to the bacterium that causes cholera, an acute intestinal infection. Oysters can be contaminated from the water they grown in or by improper handling.
THE COMMON POTATO
You would think this American staple would be safe because almost no one eats raw potatoes. The food safety issue here, linked to 108 outbreaks, usually involves potato salad. Salmonella is the main problem again. More than 40 percent of potato outbreaks can be traced back to restaurants and delis where cross contamination has occurred. Salmonella usually causes mild cramps and diarrhea, but in severe cases can cause kidney failure.
SOFT CHEESE DURING PREGNANCY
Cheese is at No. 6 on the list with 83 outbreaks. Pasteurization makes cheese safer, but many cheeses are not pasteurized. Recently consumers in California were warned about the danger of bacterial food contamination in some Latin American cheeses made with unpasteurized milk. Pregnant women may be in danger from soft cheeses like feta, Brie, and Camembert because they are more likely to be infected with the organism listeria. The CDC says that pregnant women are 20 times more likely than others to be infected by listeria and recommends that they avoid soft cheeses. Although listeria infection may be mild in most people, it can cause a miscarriage in a pregnant woman.
ICE CREAM
Associated with 75 outbreaks, ice cream is No. 7 on the list. Salmonella and staphylococcus bacteria can cause food contamination in ice cream. In 1994, an ice cream-linked outbreak of salmonella sickened thousands of people across 41 states. Soft ice cream, like soft cheeses, may contain listeria and could be hazardous for pregnant women. "Ice cream food contamination may be more common in homemade ice cream due to raw eggs," warns Blake.
TOMATOES
In both 2005 and 2006, tomato contamination with salmonella was big news as hundreds of people became sick across the country. Salmonella can enter a tomato through the soil by way of the plant's root system. Tomatoes can also be contaminated by bacteria or norovirus through cracks in the skin during handling or preparation in a restaurant. Once the tomato has been infected, the only way to avoid foodborne illness is by cooking it.
RAW BEAN AND SEED SPROUTS
Sprouts are increasingly popular in salad bars and in the American diet in general. This food, which is the germinating form of seeds and beans, grows best in a warm and moist environment. Unfortunately, E. coli and salmonella thrive in the same environment. There have been 31 outbreaks of foodborne illness due to sprouts. The FDA has been urged to place warning labels on raw sprouts.
BERRIES
Cyclospora is a type of parasite that you get when the eggs of the parasite cause food contamination. Raspberries from South America have caused outbreaks. Hepatitis A, a virus that affects the liver, has also been a berry food safety problem. In 1997, 2.6 million pounds of strawberries were recalled because of hepatitis A virus contamination. Berries, linked with 25 food contamination outbreaks since 1990, round out the list of top 10 risky foods.
THE BOTTOM LINE ON FOOD CONTAMINATION
Legislation is now working its way through Congress to strengthen the FDA food safety program. "Food safety is everybody's responsibility," says Blake, "including the FDA, growers, shippers, handlers, and consumers. The best way to protect yourself is with the four C’s: clean, cook, combat cross contamination, and chill. Don't shy away from fresh produce. It's an important part of your diet. Just use the fifth C — common sense."
Top 10 Things That Cause Bad Breath

If you're constantly popping mints or chewing gum to cover up bad breath, also known as halitosis, you're not alone. Many people have halitosis for a variety of reasons. Most cases of halitosis are caused by improper dental hygiene. If you don't brush and floss your teeth after every meal, bits of food that get stuck in your teeth and gums and on your tongue will begin to decay and emit foul odors.
An unclean mouth also means that bacteria can grow, potentially leading to gum disease, which is also one of the causes of bad breath. In addition, certain foods and drink are more likely to cause bad breath, including:
- Garlic
- Onions
- Cheese
- Orange juice
- Soda, including diet varieties
Other Causes of Bad Breath
Aside from what you eat and drink, bad breath can also be linked to:
A dry mouth. Saliva is your mouth's natural cleanser, so when your mouth is dry, dead cells can build up, which is what causes morning breath. This is an even bigger problem if you sleep with your mouth open. Smoking and certain medications can also cause dry mouth. In more extreme cases, you could have a problem with your salivary glands that leaves your mouth unusually dry.

Respiratory, mouth, throat, and nose conditions. These conditions are also often associated with bad breath. For example, discharge from a sinus infection is known to cause bad breath. If you have an upper respiratory infection such as bronchitis, the sputum coughed up can also cause halitosis.
Tobacco products, particularly smoking. Tobacco products can dry your mouth and result in bad breath. People who use tobacco are also at greater risk of developing gum disease, poor general oral health, and oral cancers.
Malnutrition. Starvation or intense dieting can result in bad breath due to ketoacidosis, which is a breakdown of chemicals that occurs during fasting.
Beating Bad Breath
To combat bad breath, try the following:
- Avoid foods and beverages that you know cause bad breath; this may also mean minimizing your intake of alcohol.
- Brush for two to three minutes after every meal and floss your teeth at least once a day.
- Brush your tongue gently to remove dead cells, including the back of your tongue, because that's where bacteria often collect.
- Drink lots of water to keep your mouth moist and clean. And water really is what's best here: Other beverages, particularly caffeinated beverages, don't work as well as water for halitosis treatment and prevention.
- Eat less meat and more vegetables and fruits each day.
- Get dental checkups at least twice a year that include an exam and cleaning.
- If you wear dentures, bridges, or removable braces, clean them thoroughly at least once a day.
- Suck candy or chew gum (preferably sugarless) to stimulate saliva production, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
If you still feel like you have bad breath after trying these tips, ask someone who is close to you for confirmation. Sometimes, you really are your own worst critic. If it is indeed an issue, make an appointment with your dentist to try to uncover what could be causing your bad breath.
Avoid drinking, eating, chewing gum, or brushing your teeth before your dental appointment. Skip the perfume or other scented products too, so that your dentist can truly assess your halitosis. Your dentist will likely ask you a number of questions, ranging from your dental hygiene habits to your general health.
In some cases, halitosis may be due to a buildup of plaque, which is a layer of bacteria on your teeth. If this is the case, the dentist may have you use a special antimicrobial mouth rinse.
If your dentist determines that the bad breath is due to gum disease, you'll be treated or referred to a gum disease doctor, called a periodontist. Also called periodontal disease, gum disease causes your gums to recede from the teeth and leaves pockets that gather bacteria and plaque. A periodontal cleaning, or more extensive treatment, may be needed.
If your dentist isn't able to uncover the reason for your bad breath, a trip to your primary care doctor for a physical exam would be the next step to determine the underlying causes of your bad breath.
Top 10 Foods That Boost Healthy Skin

"The skin is the window to the entire body,” says dermatologist Joely Kaufman-Janette, MD, assistant professor and director of the Aging and Geriatric Skin Center at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. “Part of choosing a diet for good looking skin is just eating to keep yourself healthy because your health is reflected through your skin.” Many of the nutrients and “good” fats we eat as part of a healthy diet enhance the skin’s elasticity and help create the appealing glow of healthy skin. Eat well and avoid foods high in saturated fat, says Dr. Kaufman-Janette, and you’ll see how it can result in good skin.
BLUEBERRIES
Antioxidants help fight the signs of aging skin, and blueberries are a great source. Rich in vitamin C, blueberries can play a healthy role in an otherwise decadent dessert and taste great as a cereal topping and tossed into salads. Other sources of antioxidants that you can include in your healthy diet are red wine and dark chocolate. Kaufman-Janette also offers this tip: Eating fruits and veggies in their fresh, raw form provides more antioxidants than when cooked.
FISH
Fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids should be part of a healthy skin diet. “Omega-3s are a great source of oil for the skin without clogging the pores,” says Kaufman-Janette, clarifying that omega-3s must be eaten or taken as supplements. Many people try to cut all fats from their diet, but without some fat, your skin may suffer. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered healthy fats, and a diet that is too low in healthy fats can lead to “dull, dry skin,” she warns.
WHOLE WHEAT
Think of whole-wheat bread and other whole-grain products as smart food for your skin — they’re a healthy alternative to refined white bread or pasta, says Kaufman-Janette. “The white breads and white pastas create a spike in insulin, which isn’t good for your skin,” she explains. Whole grains are also packed with fiber, which promotes healthy digestion, and Kaufman-Janette points out that digestive problems are often reflected in unhealthy skin.
WATER
“There are molecules in the skin that actually bind water,” explains Kaufman-Janette. “Your skin will not be as plump if you are dehydrated.” Skin also becomes dry when it loses too much water, so you need to drink plenty of liquids to replace daily water loss. Water is also a good alternative to sugary beverages that could negatively affect your skin by causing insulin levels to rise and fall dramatically.
GREEN TEA
Green tea has two benefits for your skin: It contains antioxidants, which may fight the effects of aging, and drinking it is a good way to stay hydrated. When given the option, choose green tea over beverages that don’t promote skin health. This is one of Kaufman-Janette’s recommended strategies for healthy skin — and overall health. She says, “If you can substitute a good choice at every single meal for a bad choice, you’ll start to look and feel healthier.”
LOW-FAT YOGURT
Yogurt is often recommended for a healthy diet because it contains probiotics, or “healthy” bacteria, which are beneficial for digestive health. “Yogurt may help ease digestive troubles, which can improve related skin conditions such as rosacea or skin inflammation,” says Kaufman-Janette, who recommends that people with these skin conditions include yogurt in their healthy diet plan. Probiotics are increasingly used in skin care lines, but she cautions that these may not be the same bacteria that are found in yogurt.
SWEET POTATOES
Sweet potatoes give you a healthy dose of vitamin A, which has been found to help reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging. There are several topical creams on the market that contain vitamin A, but Kaufman-Janette cautions against using too many of these skin products, which can be drying and irritating. It’s better to include sweet potatoes and other foods rich in vitamin A as part of a healthy diet.
BROCCOLI
Broccoli and other green vegetables are great for the skin. The richer the color of veggies and fruits, the more likely they are to contain the nutrients you need for a healthy diet. “Darker is better,” Kaufman-Janette stresses. Darker broccoli florets provide more vitamins A and C, and both of these vitamins help fight fine lines and wrinkles.
AVOCADOS
Avocados are rich in healthy fats, vitamins A and C, and fiber, make them an almost perfect healthy food that enhances your complexion and fight aging skin. Avocado is also a common ingredient in homemade or natural skin masks, but Kaufman-Janette says you are better off putting avocado in your salad than on your face. “Masks with avocado can cause clogged pores,” she says. “Definitely avoid them if you are acne prone.”
VITAMIN D
Vitamin D isn’t found naturally in the diet, but it is important for healthy skin, especially as people age, says Kaufman-Janette. People usually get Vitamin D through sun exposure, but if you live in a less sunny area or stay inside a lot, you need to get it through your diet. You can drink vitamin D-enriched beverages, eat foods fortified with vitamin D, or take a supplement in order to help slow the aging process on your skin.
10 Ways to Fight Fatigue

If you suffer from a chronic disease like rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or depression, you may be sick and tired of feeling tired. Fatigue may also be due to a lack of exercise, too much stress, or trouble sleeping. In any case, if you find yourself fighting fatigue, you are not alone. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints that bring people to their doctor’s office. Here's how to fight fatigue with some simple lifestyle changes.
START BY SEEING YOUR DOCTOR
Your doctor will evaluate your condition and order tests, as necessary. "If you suffer from chronic fatigue, the first step is to see a doctor to rule out a treatable medical problem such as anemia,” advises Elizabeth Araujo, MD, a rheumatologist at the University of Cincinnati. “If you have a chronic condition like fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis, work with your doctor to make sure your disease is being treated and controlled properly.” Get the appropriate blood work and make sure you are not having any reaction to a medication.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP
Fatigue can be one of the most difficult aspects of living with a chronic illness. “Sleep that is deep and restorative and in the range of seven to eight hours a night is ideal to help replenish important neurochemicals like natural endorphins [pain modulators] and serotonins. Sleep also allows joints and muscle to heal and rest," explains Rochelle Rosian, MD, a rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
AIM FOR MORE RESTFUL SLEEP
If you want to get refreshing sleep that helps you feel less tired when you wake up, plan your evenings carefully. "Avoid big meals, caffeine, alcohol, and television before bedtime," suggests Dr. Araujo. You should also avoid caffeine late in the day. And keep in mind that while a nightcap may help you fall asleep, it’s likely to cause you to wake up later and distract you from a restful night. Finally, consider going to bed earlier so that you can wake up earlier and ease into your day at a more leisurely pace.
EXERCISE FOR ENERGY AND TO HELP YOU SLEEP
Regular exercise not only boosts your energy, it makes it easier for you to fall asleep at night. "Engage in daily low-level exercise, such as gentle stretching and walking. Exercise will help with stress and improve sleep, as well as help maintain strength, balance, and flexibility," says Dr. Rosian. The best time to exercise to fight fatigue is early in the day. Avoid exercising in the evening because the stimulation of exercise can interfere with sleep.
EAT WELL
A nutritious diet can help energize you throughout the day. A diet high in fruit, vegetables, and grains is best, with moderation in other food groups including dairy, meat, and oils. “It's important to remember that an ideal body weight is best for the weight-bearing joints, especially the knees, feet, and ankles,” says Rosian. "I’m not a big fan of fad diets. I believe that moderation is critical when it comes to diet and exercise."
STEP INTO SUNLIGHT
One way to fight fatigue is to pay attention to your internal clock. Sunlight tells your brain and body when to get active. For some people the winter months can be the hardest time to fight fatigue due to short days and lack of sunshine. Besides bundling up and getting outside, fight winter fatigue by arranging your home and office environment to allow for maximum sun exposure. Aim for at least 30 minutes of sunlight every day.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Obesity has been called an epidemic in America, and it’s affecting young people as well as adults — one-third of children between 2 and 19 are overweight or obese. Being overweight is not just bad for your body and your self-esteem, it’s also bad for sleeping patterns. Being overweight has been shown to contribute to sleep disorders and to low energy levels. Fight fatigue by cutting back on calories, especially sugary beverages and other sweets, and increasing your exercise level. If you’re concerned about your — or your child’s — weight, talk to your doctor about creating a weight-loss plan.
MANAGE STRESS
One of the most common causes of fatigue is stress. The way you respond to stress can make a difference in the effect it has on you. Even if you can't avoid stress in your life, try to deal with it in a constructive way. Learning relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, tai chi, and self-hypnosis will lessen stress and keep those tired feeling at bay. "A daily walk or a yoga class can also help you reduce your stress, control your weight, and fight fatigue," advises Araujo.
TRY AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy uses the essential oils from plants and other sources to lessen the effects of stress and promote well-being. The oil is usually either rubbed into your skin or inhaled. Some laboratory studies performed on animals support the effectiveness of essential oils in promoting energy. Essential oils, such as those made from geranium, lavender, and cedarwood, may send chemical messages to your brain that improve your mood and cause you to feel more relaxed and energized.
BE GOOD TO YOURSELF
If you have a debilitating disease like rheumatoid arthritis or chronic fatigue syndrome, or if you have just been pushing yourself too hard, you need to accept feeling a certain amount of fatigue. Getting frustrated and angry about being tired only worsens fatigue. Consider making accommodations in your work schedule, or at least counter some of the time spent at work with activities that bring you joy and satisfaction — compromise and balance are necessary. "People who stick to a sensible schedule and a regular regimen do better at fighting fatigue in the long run," says Rosian.

The Dirty Dozen: 12 Most Pesticide-Laden Foods (Go Organic!)

CELERY
This veggie is not the richest in vitamins and minerals, but it still has value as a low-calorie, high-water content snack that fills you up without bulking you up. Carla Fynan, RD, a nutritionist at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, N.J., recommends adding peanut butter for a bit of protein and healthy monounsaturated fat. Rinsing and scrubbing celery may help somewhat, but celery’s thin skin lets pesticides penetrate all the way through, so you’re really better off choosing celery from the organic fruits and vegetables section of your grocer. Non-organic alternatives include broccoli, radishes, and onions.
PEACHES
This sweet, delicious fruit is high in vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber. It also has a laxative and cleansing effect on the bowels and is easy for the elderly to digest, says Marvin Kunikiyo, DC, author of the natural health book, Revolutionizing Your Health. You can peel peaches to rid them of some pesticides, but that does away with valuable nutrients, and the skin is so thin that many pesticides penetrate the fruit anyway. Therefore, organic food is really the best choice for this member of the dirty dozen. Non-organic alternatives: watermelon, oranges, grapefruit.
STRAWBERRIES
With their rich color and delicious flavor, strawberries are positively teeming with antioxidants, including vitamins A and C. Fynan says they are also low in calories and great with any number of dishes (salads and cereals) or on their own. You can’t peel a strawberry and rinsing doesn’t do much, so spending a few dollars for the organic food version is a good idea. Non-organic alternatives: kiwi, pineapples.
APPLES
You might think that peeling an apple would be the best way to rid it of pesticides, but that peel is a treasure trove of valuable nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and an antioxidant called quercetin. Instead, rinse and scrub the apple thoroughly or buy organic food to ensure avoiding contaminants from this member of the dirty dozen. Non-organic alternatives: bananas, tangerines.
BLUEBERRIES
These tiny berries are antioxidant powerhouses, with a higher antioxidant level than any other fruit or vegetable according to studies. Unfortunately, up to 13 different pesticides have been detected on a single sample of non-organic blueberries, says Amy Hess-Fischl, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator on staff at the University of Chicago Kovler Diabetes Center. Choose organic blueberries even if you’re on a limited budget when you buy organic food. Non-organic alternative: raspberries.
NECTARINES
These fruits look and taste a lot like peaches, so it’s not surprising they have some of the same health benefits — low in calories and high in vitamins A and C. Nectarines also have some of the same pesticide problems — 95.1 percent of samples tested positive for pesticides. Rinse or scrub them as much as possible or buy organic food when you can. Non-organic alternatives: papaya, mango.
BELL PEPPERS
The bright, bold colors of these vegetables, particularly the red ones, are a sure sign that they are brimming with antioxidants, most notably vitamin C. Since you wouldn’t normally peel a pepper, rinse or scrub it as much as possible if you can’t buy the organic version. Cooking also can sometimes reduce pesticide levels, though it also reduces the nutrients you derive from it. Non-organic alternatives: green peas, cabbage.
SPINACH
Spinach is a low-calorie, delicious choice in salads, and that bold green color is an indicator of its rich content of nutrients such as vitamins A and C, calcium, folate, and fiber. Rinsing and drying the spinach before use helps some, but here again, organic food is the best way to ensure low pesticide exposure when it comes to this member of the dirty dozen fruits and vegetables. Non-organic alternatives: cabbage, broccoli.
CHERRIES
Cherries have a whole laundry list of helpful nutrients, says Fynan, including vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, folate, magnesium, and fiber. They also have roughly 42 pesticides on them, according to government testing. A safer bet may be imported cherries, as they have three times less pesticide residue than cherries grown in the United States. Non-organic alternatives: cranberries, raspberries.
KALE AND COLLARD GREENS
Most of what was said about spinach, both in terms of nutrients and pesticide levels, also holds true for the dynamic duo of kale and collard greens. But unlike spinach, kale and collard greens are most often cooked, and that does help with some of the pesticide levels — of course cooking also reduces the nutrient levels of these leafy greens. Your best bet is to buy organic food to get the most nutrients without pesticides. Non-organic alternatives: asparagus, cabbage.
POTATOES
There are many varieties of potatoes to choose from and many ways to serve them up. People often peel potatoes, which does help reduce the pesticide levels of this root vegetable member of the dirty dozen. The only problem is, that the potato skins are where most of the nutrients of the potato come from. “Make sure you eat the skin for the greatest benefit,” says Fynan. “It’s high in fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.” Non-organic alternatives: eggplant, mushrooms.
IMPORTED GRAPES
In addition to vitamins A and C, red and Concord grapes have a compound in the skin called resveratrol, which seems to provide specific heart-healthy benefits. Since imported grapes were specifically singled out on the Environmental Working Group “dirty dozen” list, check on the origin of what you are buying and choose domestically grown grapes whenever possible. 10 High-Cholesterol Foods to Avoid

According to the American Heart Association, a diet that is high in cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats raises blood cholesterol levels and puts you at risk for heart disease. Saturated fats are found in foods like meat and dairy products that come from animals, while trans fats lurk in baked goods and fast foods. Here are some obvious and not-so-obvious high-cholesterol food choices — most of which are also high in unhealthy fats.
EGGS
The first thing you need to know about high cholesterol food is the numbers. The American Heart Association recommends a maximum daily cholesterol intake of 300 mg per day. If you already have high cholesterol, you need to stay below 200 mg. When you think of a high-cholesterol food, the first thing that comes to mind might be eggs. If you have an egg for breakfast you are already up to 213 mg of cholesterol. How about some whole grain cereal with fruit as an alternative?
CHEESEBURGERS
If you are like many Americans, you sometimes have lunch at a fast food restaurant. Before you order that double cheeseburger, consider this: A McDonald’s Big Mac has 85 mg of cholesterol and a Wendy's Classic Double With Everything has a whopping 175 mg of cholesterol. You might want to hold the fries and the shake, or better yet, order a plain burger instead.
MACARONI AND CHEESE
The typical mac-and-cheese ingredients — whole milk, butter, and cheese — are loaded with saturated fats and cholesterol. But this all-American comfort recipe does not have to be a high-cholesterol food. By substituting 1 percent milk and evaporated milk for butter and whole milk, and using low-fat cheese, you can decrease your calories and have your macaroni and cheese with less than half the fat and cholesterol of the traditional recipe.
ICE CREAM
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, America produced 1.55 billion gallons of ice cream in 2007, and the cold, sweet stuff is a staple in 90 percent of American households. Ice cream beats cookies and brownies as our most popular frozen dessert, but did you know that a single cup of ice cream has more fat than a hamburger and more cholesterol than 10 glazed doughnuts? Skip the scoop and try a cup of fresh fruit for dessert instead. Fruit is low in calories and high in the fiber, vitamins, and nutrients you really need — making it one of the best things you can eat for lower cholesterol.
RIB-EYE STEAK
Even under the best of circumstances (with the fat well-trimmed, and cooked in olive oil), a 4-ounce rib-eye steak takes up a big chunk of your recommended daily allowance for saturated fat and cholesterol. With nothing else on your plate, you will be eating 20 percent of your allowable saturated fat and 22 percent of your cholesterol, which doesn't leave much room for the rest of the day. If you’re not ready to say goodbye to beef, consider leaner cuts of meat — such as tenderloin, flank, round, rump, or tip steak — for lower cholesterol.
MUFFINS
Not all muffins are created equal. Sure, you can get an English muffin with no saturated fat and no cholesterol, but many muffins — especially those tempting treats loaded with extra ingredients that you can buy or bake at home — could have up to 8 grams of fat in a single serving. A low-fat bran muffin made with whole-wheat flour that gives you some fiber, a lot less fat, and lower cholesterol is a much better choice.
SEAFOOD
Some types of seafood are good for you, but others are loaded with cholesterol. Lobster, for example, is not a good choice if you have heart disease or high cholesterol. Three ounces of lobster has 61 mg of cholesterol — and that’s before you dip it in melted butter. If you go out for seafood, stay away from the butter and remember that broiled is much better than fried. You also need to keep in mind the amount you eat, as a double portion will also double the cholesterol.
CHICKEN
Although chicken is usually considered to be a good low-fat meat choice, how you cook it can make a big difference. For example, one chicken leg with the skin still on it has more fat and cholesterol than a cup of ice cream or a hamburger. Keeping the skin on poultry or frying it can turn it into a high-cholesterol food. Also, remember that dark poultry meat has more fat than white meat. When making chicken choices, opt for skinless and skip the dark meat.
LIVER
Liver is loaded with iron — which could be good for you — but it is also high in cholesterol. Cholesterol is made and stored in the liver, and the most concentrated levels of cholesterol in animal meats are found in organ meats like the liver. Remember, the American Heart Association says no more than 300 mg of cholesterol for a healthy adult. Three ounces of cooked beef liver will give you 331 mg of cholesterol. Skip this high-cholesterol food if your cholesterol is high and stick with lean cuts of meat instead.
SNACK FOODS
Trans fats can turn a healthy food into a high-cholesterol food. These fats result from adding hydrogen to vegetable oils, which are then used in many commercial baked goods or fried foods such as cookies, cakes, French fries, onion rings, and crackers. Whether it's fried, au gratin, crispy, or stuffed, many of the things we love to eat are bad for our cholesterol levels. Know the allowable numbers for fat and cholesterol. Read the labels, cook smart, order wisely, and remember smaller portions are another way to cut back on high-cholesterol foods.

Some people treat their bodies like a Ferrari, others, like a clunker. A Ferrari-fed body is given a healthy diet with the right mix of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, salts, vitamins, and soluble and insoluble fiber — all requirements for avoiding indigestion. “If you’re missing any of those, it’s a problem,” says Benjamin Krevsky, MD, associate chief of gastroenterology at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Good fuel enables the body to work more efficiently. When you’re having indigestion, which includes symptoms like nausea and bloating, what not to eat becomes equally important. Here are foods to avoid when you’re having tummy troubles.
DAIRY PRODUCTSOne food group that can be hard to digest is dairy — mainly because of the sugar lactose found in milk and other dairy products. When lactose isn’t digested properly, such as in people with lactose intolerance, gas and bloating result. If you consume too much lactose, it goes into the large intestine, and diarrhea can develop or worsen. During digestive problems, it may still be okay to eat yogurt and hard cheeses because they have no lactose, or you can try lactose-free milk.
SPICY FOODS
If you’re experiencing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, you’ll want to avoid food choices that stimulate the digestive system, and these include spicy foods, says Jung Kim, a registered dietitian and specialist with Clinical Nutritional Support Services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Spicy foods are “incredibly variable,” says Dr. Krevsky — they have no effect on some people, but cause indigestion for others. In general, you should choose bland foods when you’re having digestive problems, and be sure to avoid spices if you’re sensitive to them.
ACIDIC FOODS
Tomato sauce and citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits, are acidic and can cause digestive problems. Many people don’t realize that carbonated beverages are also acidic — Krevsky says that if you leave a pearl in a glass of soda pop overnight, it will dissolve. When you have an upset stomach, avoid acidic foods, he says.
FATTY FOODS
Fatty foods stimulate contractions in the digestive tract, which, surprisingly, can either slow down the emptying of the stomach and worsen constipation or speed up movement and worsen or lead to diarrhea. The effect can depend on the type of fat and your tendency toward constipation or diarrhea. When you’re experiencing a bout of indigestion, put low-fat foods on the menu and eat small meals spaced throughout the day, which can put less pressure on your stomach. Avoid high-fat culprits, like butter, ice cream, red meat, and cheese, at least for a while.
FATTY FOODS
The problem with fried foods is the same as with fatty foods — they can move, undigested, through the body too quickly, leading to diarrhea, or stay in your digestive tract too long, causing you to feel full and bloated. Many fried foods are low in fiber and take longer to digest. So if you’re dealing with either diarrhea or constipation, you’ll want to avoid fried foods for a while. The conventional wisdom, says Krevsky, is that when you have indigestion, you should avoid fried foods because they tend to slow down the emptying of the stomach.
PROCESSED FOODS
If you’re constipated, avoid processed foods because they lack fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements, Krevsky says. Processed foods also often contain preservatives and artificial coloring, Kim says, and people with allergies or sensitivities to these additives will feel their effects during digestive problems. Note that some packaged foods contain lactose, which can give you gas and worsen any discomfort you’re already going through.
ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER
The artificial sweetener perhaps most associated with digestive problems is sorbitol. It is a hard-to-digest sugar found naturally in some fruits, including prunes, apples, and peaches, and is also used to sweeten gum and diet foods. Once sorbitol reaches the large intestine, it often creates gas, bloating, and diarrhea. If you have diarrhea, read food labels so that you can avoid sorbitol, Krevsky says.
ALCOHOL
If you’re feeling nauseated, the last thing you should have is an alcoholic drink. “It will probably make you sicker,” Kim says. Nutritionally speaking, alcohol itself is a big zero. It has no protein, vitamins, other nutrients, or “good” carbs. As Krevsky explains, alcohol is toxic to the stomach lining and changes liver metabolism. Drinking too much can cause indigestion, among other health problems. Moderation is key.
CAFFEINE
Caffeine stimulates gastrointestinal tract motility, making contents move more quickly through your system, and excessive amounts can give anyone diarrhea, Krevsky says. So if you already have diarrhea, caffeine will only worsen your digestive problem. He also warns against simply switching to decaf coffee because it still has some caffeine. Remember that tea, soda, and chocolate are other sources of caffeine, and should be put on hold until tummy troubles go away.
SWEET OR SALTY
The body doesn’t like trying to digest foods that are super sweet or salty — it likes moderation. When you’re sick, “You want something that’s easily digested,” Kim says. “Some people are affected by sugar levels when they are nauseous.” Chocolate, a sweet-tooth favorite, is a culprit in many digestive problems, including heartburn and the more-serious GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
SPOILED FOODS
Many refrigerated foods can go bad, such as dated items like eggs, dairy products, and meat. Bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli can also pass from raw meat to veggies and fruits. Eating tainted foods can cause digestive problems or worsen existing ones, such as diarrhea and vomiting. Be aware of the symptoms of food poisoning — muscle pain, fatigue, and abdominal cramps — because food poisoning can be life threatening, Krevsky says.
7 Top Gas-Producing Foods

Excessive gas can strike for many reasons, including swallowing too much air, changes in your diet — such as suddenly boosting your fiber intake with gas-producing foods — and food intolerance or difficulty digesting certain foods. Many good-for-you foods can cause gas, but eating them slowly and limiting or avoiding those that give you severe intestinal gas can help ensure you get good nutrition without all the bloating and discomfort.
VEGETABLES
The sugars in some vegetables can lead to intestinal gas as they’re digested. Onions and artichokes contain fructose, a type of sugar, while another sugar, raffinose, is found in asparagus, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage, among others. Vegetables that have soluble fiber, like peas, can cause gas as they’re digested in the large intestine. Those with insoluble fiber should pass through without discomfort or excessive gas.
FRUITS
Some fruits contain another sugar, called sorbitol, which causes excessive gas. The biggest culprits include prunes, apples, peaches, and pears. Sugar-free gum and candy are sweetened with sorbitol, which is why they can lead to excessive gas, too. Fruits also contain soluble fiber, which when digested in the large intestine produces gas as a byproduct.
STARCHY FOODS
Starches, which are very high in carbohydrates, can cause gas when your digestive tract goes through the process of breaking them down. At the top of the list are foods made with wheat, including breads, cereals, and pastas, all of which can lead to intestinal gas. Other common gas-producing foods in this category are corn and potatoes. Unlike all the other starches, the one that doesn’t seem to create intestinal gas is rice.
MILK AND DAIRY
Milk and other dairy products contain a sugar called lactose, which can be difficult for your digestive tract to process if your body doesn’t have enough of the enzyme lactase. Cheese, ice cream, and milk all contain lactose, and may cause excessive gas in people. Those with lactose intolerance may need to skip these foods to avoid intestinal gas and belly pain.
OATS
Though oatmeal makes a healthy and delicious breakfast, packed full of cholesterol-reducing fiber, it's also one of the foods that can cause intestinal gas. Oatmeal, oatmeal cookies, and other oat products — including oat bran — can all result in excessive gas because of their high soluble-fiber content. If you want to eat oats for their many health benefits, try slowly adding them to your diet in limited quantities to give your body time to adjust. If you’re a fan of oat bran, try switching to wheat bran, which is high in insoluble fiber that passes through the body, usually without a problem.
BEANS
Everyone knows the ditty: "Beans, beans, the musical fruit…" As nutritious as beans are, they’re notorious as a major gas-producing food. Beans create excessive gas for two reasons. First, they have a high raffinose content — the same gas-causing sugar found in certain vegetables. Second, beans also contain soluble fiber, whose digestion releases intestinal gas. Keep track not only of the amount of beans you eat, but also of other gas-producing foods you might be eating them with, like the cheese and onions you sprinkle on your three-bean chili. Or try an over-the-counter digestive aid like Beano.
SODAS AND SOFT DRINKS
A fizzy soda or sweet, fruity drink may taste delicious and refreshing, but your belly may have trouble digesting it — and uncomfortable stomach gas may be the result. The carbonation in sodas and soft drinks is just air, which can result in uncomfortable and excessive gas. Fructose, the sugar used to sweeten some of these beverages, can also be difficult to digest, resulting in intestinal gas.
Hidden Fats in Your Diet

It's important to pay attention to how many fat grams you eat each day to make sure you're getting just the right amount of fat in your diet and no more.
The recommendation is that no more than 30 percent of your daily calories should come from fat, says Anne Wolf, RD, a researcher at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Based on the average daily total intake of 2,000 calories, this means we should eat less than 65 grams of fat each day. "Typically we're eating well over what we need," notes Wolf.
There are two kinds of fats, commonly considered "good" and "bad" fats. Saturated and trans fats are bad, as they are linked to a number of health problems, like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unsaturated fats — the good ones — can actually protect your body from some of these conditions. Still, that doesn't mean you can eat them without limit because too much of any fat, or of any food for that matter, can lead to weight gain.
When tracking the fat content of your meals, make sure that most of your fat intake is in the form of unsaturated fats, that less than 20 grams are coming from saturated fats, and that hardly any are from trans fat.

While the high fat content of certain foods is no surprise, you may not realize that many other foods are loaded with hidden fat:
While you might know that olive and vegetable oils are high in fat, so are nuts, olives, avocados, and certain fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines. These foods contain the good, unsaturated fats — just monitor how much you eat to control your weight.

Foods that Reduce Bone Density

You probably know that calcium and vitamin D are needed to build strong bones. But what you may not know is that there are certain elements in your diet that can actually reduce bone density, increasing your risk for osteoporosis.
Too Much Protein May Lower Bone Density
You need protein to build strong bones, but when you eat too much protein, your body produces chemicals called sulfates that can cause calcium to leach out of the bones. This effect on bones is more likely to occur with animal protein than vegetable protein. In the recent Nurses Health Study II, conducted by Harvard Medical School, 116,686 women were followed for 10 years. The researchers found that women who ate red meat at least five times a week were more likely to have a bone fracture than women who ate red meat only once a week.
The Role of Caffeinated Drinks
In a recent study of 31,527 Swedish women ages 40 to 76, conducted by the Swedish Department of Toxicology’s National Food Administration, researchers found that women who drink 330 milligrams of caffeine or more a day — the equivalent of about four cups of coffee — have an increased risk of bone fractures. This risk was especially noted in women who had a lower consumption of calcium. The researchers did not find an association between tea consumption and an increased risk for bone fractures. One reason could be that the caffeine content of tea is typically half that of coffee.
The recent Framingham Osteoporosis Study measured the bone mineral density in the spines and hips of 1,413 women and 1,125 men against the frequency of their soft drink consumption. The researchers concluded that cola and diet cola beverages (though not other carbonated drinks) may cause bone loss in women and may involve not just the caffeine, but the phosphorus in colas, too. “It may be that the connection between colas and bone loss is due in part to the substitution of soda for milk, decreasing calcium intake,” says Kristine Cuthrell, RD, research nutritionist and project coordinator, Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
The Retinol Form of Vitamin A
In the Nurses Health Study II, researchers found that women taking vitamin A in doses exceeding 3,000 micrograms (mcg) a day were twice as likely to suffer a hip fracture than women who take 1,500 mcg or less a day of vitamin A. Although vitamin A is necessary for bone growth, too much of the retinol form of vitamin A interferes with vitamin D absorption, which, in turn, causes bone loss. The retinol form of vitamin A can be found in such animal-source foods as liver, egg yolks, and dairy products as well as dietary supplements. The beta carotene form of vitamin A, found in plant sources such as carrots and sweet potatoes, has not been linked with a negative impact on bone health.
Other Factors That May Raise Your Risk
Other dietary factors that can impact bone density include:
Sodium. Too much sodium in your diet can cause you to excrete calcium in your urine and perspiration. Sodium is found in table salt and many processed foods.
Oxalates, another form of salt found in some foods, can prevent you from absorbing calcium if the oxalates and calcium are contained in the same food product. Spinach, rhubarb, and sweet potatoes contain oxalates. Although these foods can play a role in a healthy diet, they should not be considered sources of calcium. Fortunately, oxalates do not interfere with the absorption of calcium from other foods eaten at the same time as the oxalate-containing foods.
Wheat bran. The only food known to reduce the absorption of calcium when eaten at the same time as calcium is 100 percent wheat bran. If you take calcium supplements, foods containing wheat bran should be eaten two or more hours before or after taking the supplement.
Alcohol. Excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages is also associated with lower bone density because alcohol interferes with the absorption of calcium and vitamin D. To lower your risk for osteoporosis, limit your intake of alcohol to one drink a day.
Rebalance With Fruits and Vegetables
“A diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in animal protein and carbohydrates, will tend to result in mild acidosis which, over time, can contribute to significant bone loss,” says Cuthrell. “Neutralizing an acid-producing diet, which can be done by eating fruits and vegetables, may be an important key to reducing bone loss while aging.”
Eating a well-balanced diet can be tricky when you are trying to keep your bones healthy. However, getting the recommended amount of calcium each day to offset any loss of calcium caused by any other foods you eat will go along way to preventing bone loss.

CELERY
This veggie is not the richest in vitamins and minerals, but it still has value as a low-calorie, high-water content snack that fills you up without bulking you up. Carla Fynan, RD, a nutritionist at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, N.J., recommends adding peanut butter for a bit of protein and healthy monounsaturated fat. Rinsing and scrubbing celery may help somewhat, but celery’s thin skin lets pesticides penetrate all the way through, so you’re really better off choosing celery from the organic fruits and vegetables section of your grocer. Non-organic alternatives include broccoli, radishes, and onions.
PEACHES
This sweet, delicious fruit is high in vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber. It also has a laxative and cleansing effect on the bowels and is easy for the elderly to digest, says Marvin Kunikiyo, DC, author of the natural health book, Revolutionizing Your Health. You can peel peaches to rid them of some pesticides, but that does away with valuable nutrients, and the skin is so thin that many pesticides penetrate the fruit anyway. Therefore, organic food is really the best choice for this member of the dirty dozen. Non-organic alternatives: watermelon, oranges, grapefruit.
STRAWBERRIES
With their rich color and delicious flavor, strawberries are positively teeming with antioxidants, including vitamins A and C. Fynan says they are also low in calories and great with any number of dishes (salads and cereals) or on their own. You can’t peel a strawberry and rinsing doesn’t do much, so spending a few dollars for the organic food version is a good idea. Non-organic alternatives: kiwi, pineapples.
APPLES
You might think that peeling an apple would be the best way to rid it of pesticides, but that peel is a treasure trove of valuable nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and an antioxidant called quercetin. Instead, rinse and scrub the apple thoroughly or buy organic food to ensure avoiding contaminants from this member of the dirty dozen. Non-organic alternatives: bananas, tangerines.
BLUEBERRIES
These tiny berries are antioxidant powerhouses, with a higher antioxidant level than any other fruit or vegetable according to studies. Unfortunately, up to 13 different pesticides have been detected on a single sample of non-organic blueberries, says Amy Hess-Fischl, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator on staff at the University of Chicago Kovler Diabetes Center. Choose organic blueberries even if you’re on a limited budget when you buy organic food. Non-organic alternative: raspberries.
NECTARINES
These fruits look and taste a lot like peaches, so it’s not surprising they have some of the same health benefits — low in calories and high in vitamins A and C. Nectarines also have some of the same pesticide problems — 95.1 percent of samples tested positive for pesticides. Rinse or scrub them as much as possible or buy organic food when you can. Non-organic alternatives: papaya, mango.
BELL PEPPERS
The bright, bold colors of these vegetables, particularly the red ones, are a sure sign that they are brimming with antioxidants, most notably vitamin C. Since you wouldn’t normally peel a pepper, rinse or scrub it as much as possible if you can’t buy the organic version. Cooking also can sometimes reduce pesticide levels, though it also reduces the nutrients you derive from it. Non-organic alternatives: green peas, cabbage.
SPINACH
Spinach is a low-calorie, delicious choice in salads, and that bold green color is an indicator of its rich content of nutrients such as vitamins A and C, calcium, folate, and fiber. Rinsing and drying the spinach before use helps some, but here again, organic food is the best way to ensure low pesticide exposure when it comes to this member of the dirty dozen fruits and vegetables. Non-organic alternatives: cabbage, broccoli.
CHERRIES
Cherries have a whole laundry list of helpful nutrients, says Fynan, including vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, folate, magnesium, and fiber. They also have roughly 42 pesticides on them, according to government testing. A safer bet may be imported cherries, as they have three times less pesticide residue than cherries grown in the United States. Non-organic alternatives: cranberries, raspberries.
KALE AND COLLARD GREENS
Most of what was said about spinach, both in terms of nutrients and pesticide levels, also holds true for the dynamic duo of kale and collard greens. But unlike spinach, kale and collard greens are most often cooked, and that does help with some of the pesticide levels — of course cooking also reduces the nutrient levels of these leafy greens. Your best bet is to buy organic food to get the most nutrients without pesticides. Non-organic alternatives: asparagus, cabbage.
POTATOES
There are many varieties of potatoes to choose from and many ways to serve them up. People often peel potatoes, which does help reduce the pesticide levels of this root vegetable member of the dirty dozen. The only problem is, that the potato skins are where most of the nutrients of the potato come from. “Make sure you eat the skin for the greatest benefit,” says Fynan. “It’s high in fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.” Non-organic alternatives: eggplant, mushrooms.
IMPORTED GRAPES
In addition to vitamins A and C, red and Concord grapes have a compound in the skin called resveratrol, which seems to provide specific heart-healthy benefits. Since imported grapes were specifically singled out on the Environmental Working Group “dirty dozen” list, check on the origin of what you are buying and choose domestically grown grapes whenever possible. Non-organic alternatives: kiwi, raspberries.
10 High-Cholesterol Foods to Avoid

According to the American Heart Association, a diet that is high in cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats raises blood cholesterol levels and puts you at risk for heart disease. Saturated fats are found in foods like meat and dairy products that come from animals, while trans fats lurk in baked goods and fast foods. Here are some obvious and not-so-obvious high-cholesterol food choices — most of which are also high in unhealthy fats.
EGGS
The first thing you need to know about high cholesterol food is the numbers. The American Heart Association recommends a maximum daily cholesterol intake of 300 mg per day. If you already have high cholesterol, you need to stay below 200 mg. When you think of a high-cholesterol food, the first thing that comes to mind might be eggs. If you have an egg for breakfast you are already up to 213 mg of cholesterol. How about some whole grain cereal with fruit as an alternative?
CHEESEBURGERS
If you are like many Americans, you sometimes have lunch at a fast food restaurant. Before you order that double cheeseburger, consider this: A McDonald’s Big Mac has 85 mg of cholesterol and a Wendy's Classic Double With Everything has a whopping 175 mg of cholesterol. You might want to hold the fries and the shake, or better yet, order a plain burger instead.
MACARONI AND CHEESE
The typical mac-and-cheese ingredients — whole milk, butter, and cheese — are loaded with saturated fats and cholesterol. But this all-American comfort recipe does not have to be a high-cholesterol food. By substituting 1 percent milk and evaporated milk for butter and whole milk, and using low-fat cheese, you can decrease your calories and have your macaroni and cheese with less than half the fat and cholesterol of the traditional recipe.
ICE CREAM
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, America produced 1.55 billion gallons of ice cream in 2007, and the cold, sweet stuff is a staple in 90 percent of American households. Ice cream beats cookies and brownies as our most popular frozen dessert, but did you know that a single cup of ice cream has more fat than a hamburger and more cholesterol than 10 glazed doughnuts? Skip the scoop and try a cup of fresh fruit for dessert instead. Fruit is low in calories and high in the fiber, vitamins, and nutrients you really need — making it one of the best things you can eat for lower cholesterol.
RIB-EYE STEAK
Even under the best of circumstances (with the fat well-trimmed, and cooked in olive oil), a 4-ounce rib-eye steak takes up a big chunk of your recommended daily allowance for saturated fat and cholesterol. With nothing else on your plate, you will be eating 20 percent of your allowable saturated fat and 22 percent of your cholesterol, which doesn't leave much room for the rest of the day. If you’re not ready to say goodbye to beef, consider leaner cuts of meat — such as tenderloin, flank, round, rump, or tip steak — for lower cholesterol.
MUFFINS
Not all muffins are created equal. Sure, you can get an English muffin with no saturated fat and no cholesterol, but many muffins — especially those tempting treats loaded with extra ingredients that you can buy or bake at home — could have up to 8 grams of fat in a single serving. A low-fat bran muffin made with whole-wheat flour that gives you some fiber, a lot less fat, and lower cholesterol is a much better choice.
SEAFOOD
Some types of seafood are good for you, but others are loaded with cholesterol. Lobster, for example, is not a good choice if you have heart disease or high cholesterol. Three ounces of lobster has 61 mg of cholesterol — and that’s before you dip it in melted butter. If you go out for seafood, stay away from the butter and remember that broiled is much better than fried. You also need to keep in mind the amount you eat, as a double portion will also double the cholesterol.
CHICKEN
Although chicken is usually considered to be a good low-fat meat choice, how you cook it can make a big difference. For example, one chicken leg with the skin still on it has more fat and cholesterol than a cup of ice cream or a hamburger. Keeping the skin on poultry or frying it can turn it into a high-cholesterol food. Also, remember that dark poultry meat has more fat than white meat. When making chicken choices, opt for skinless and skip the dark meat.
LIVER
Liver is loaded with iron — which could be good for you — but it is also high in cholesterol. Cholesterol is made and stored in the liver, and the most concentrated levels of cholesterol in animal meats are found in organ meats like the liver. Remember, the American Heart Association says no more than 300 mg of cholesterol for a healthy adult. Three ounces of cooked beef liver will give you 331 mg of cholesterol. Skip this high-cholesterol food if your cholesterol is high and stick with lean cuts of meat instead.
SNACK FOODS
Trans fats can turn a healthy food into a high-cholesterol food. These fats result from adding hydrogen to vegetable oils, which are then used in many commercial baked goods or fried foods such as cookies, cakes, French fries, onion rings, and crackers. Whether it's fried, au gratin, crispy, or stuffed, many of the things we love to eat are bad for our cholesterol levels. Know the allowable numbers for fat and cholesterol. Read the labels, cook smart, order wisely, and remember smaller portions are another way to cut back on high-cholesterol foods.
11 Foods That Can Worsen Indigestion

Some people treat their bodies like a Ferrari, others, like a clunker. A Ferrari-fed body is given a healthy diet with the right mix of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, salts, vitamins, and soluble and insoluble fiber — all requirements for avoiding indigestion. “If you’re missing any of those, it’s a problem,” says Benjamin Krevsky, MD, associate chief of gastroenterology at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Good fuel enables the body to work more efficiently. When you’re having indigestion, which includes symptoms like nausea and bloating, what not to eat becomes equally important. Here are foods to avoid when you’re having tummy troubles.
DAIRY PRODUCTS
SPICY FOODS
If you’re experiencing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, you’ll want to avoid food choices that stimulate the digestive system, and these include spicy foods, says Jung Kim, a registered dietitian and specialist with Clinical Nutritional Support Services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Spicy foods are “incredibly variable,” says Dr. Krevsky — they have no effect on some people, but cause indigestion for others. In general, you should choose bland foods when you’re having digestive problems, and be sure to avoid spices if you’re sensitive to them.
ACIDIC FOODS
Tomato sauce and citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits, are acidic and can cause digestive problems. Many people don’t realize that carbonated beverages are also acidic — Krevsky says that if you leave a pearl in a glass of soda pop overnight, it will dissolve. When you have an upset stomach, avoid acidic foods, he says.
FATTY FOODS
Fatty foods stimulate contractions in the digestive tract, which, surprisingly, can either slow down the emptying of the stomach and worsen constipation or speed up movement and worsen or lead to diarrhea. The effect can depend on the type of fat and your tendency toward constipation or diarrhea. When you’re experiencing a bout of indigestion, put low-fat foods on the menu and eat small meals spaced throughout the day, which can put less pressure on your stomach. Avoid high-fat culprits, like butter, ice cream, red meat, and cheese, at least for a while.
FATTY FOODS
The problem with fried foods is the same as with fatty foods — they can move, undigested, through the body too quickly, leading to diarrhea, or stay in your digestive tract too long, causing you to feel full and bloated. Many fried foods are low in fiber and take longer to digest. So if you’re dealing with either diarrhea or constipation, you’ll want to avoid fried foods for a while. The conventional wisdom, says Krevsky, is that when you have indigestion, you should avoid fried foods because they tend to slow down the emptying of the stomach.
PROCESSED FOODS
If you’re constipated, avoid processed foods because they lack fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements, Krevsky says. Processed foods also often contain preservatives and artificial coloring, Kim says, and people with allergies or sensitivities to these additives will feel their effects during digestive problems. Note that some packaged foods contain lactose, which can give you gas and worsen any discomfort you’re already going through.
ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER
The artificial sweetener perhaps most associated with digestive problems is sorbitol. It is a hard-to-digest sugar found naturally in some fruits, including prunes, apples, and peaches, and is also used to sweeten gum and diet foods. Once sorbitol reaches the large intestine, it often creates gas, bloating, and diarrhea. If you have diarrhea, read food labels so that you can avoid sorbitol, Krevsky says.
ALCOHOL
If you’re feeling nauseated, the last thing you should have is an alcoholic drink. “It will probably make you sicker,” Kim says. Nutritionally speaking, alcohol itself is a big zero. It has no protein, vitamins, other nutrients, or “good” carbs. As Krevsky explains, alcohol is toxic to the stomach lining and changes liver metabolism. Drinking too much can cause indigestion, among other health problems. Moderation is key.
CAFFEINE
Caffeine stimulates gastrointestinal tract motility, making contents move more quickly through your system, and excessive amounts can give anyone diarrhea, Krevsky says. So if you already have diarrhea, caffeine will only worsen your digestive problem. He also warns against simply switching to decaf coffee because it still has some caffeine. Remember that tea, soda, and chocolate are other sources of caffeine, and should be put on hold until tummy troubles go away.
SWEET OR SALTY
The body doesn’t like trying to digest foods that are super sweet or salty — it likes moderation. When you’re sick, “You want something that’s easily digested,” Kim says. “Some people are affected by sugar levels when they are nauseous.” Chocolate, a sweet-tooth favorite, is a culprit in many digestive problems, including heartburn and the more-serious GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
SPOILED FOODS
Many refrigerated foods can go bad, such as dated items like eggs, dairy products, and meat. Bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli can also pass from raw meat to veggies and fruits. Eating tainted foods can cause digestive problems or worsen existing ones, such as diarrhea and vomiting. Be aware of the symptoms of food poisoning — muscle pain, fatigue, and abdominal cramps — because food poisoning can be life threatening, Krevsky says.
7 Top Gas-Producing Foods

Excessive gas can strike for many reasons, including swallowing too much air, changes in your diet — such as suddenly boosting your fiber intake with gas-producing foods — and food intolerance or difficulty digesting certain foods. Many good-for-you foods can cause gas, but eating them slowly and limiting or avoiding those that give you severe intestinal gas can help ensure you get good nutrition without all the bloating and discomfort.
VEGETABLES
The sugars in some vegetables can lead to intestinal gas as they’re digested. Onions and artichokes contain fructose, a type of sugar, while another sugar, raffinose, is found in asparagus, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage, among others. Vegetables that have soluble fiber, like peas, can cause gas as they’re digested in the large intestine. Those with insoluble fiber should pass through without discomfort or excessive gas.
FRUITS
Some fruits contain another sugar, called sorbitol, which causes excessive gas. The biggest culprits include prunes, apples, peaches, and pears. Sugar-free gum and candy are sweetened with sorbitol, which is why they can lead to excessive gas, too. Fruits also contain soluble fiber, which when digested in the large intestine produces gas as a byproduct.
STARCHY FOODS
Starches, which are very high in carbohydrates, can cause gas when your digestive tract goes through the process of breaking them down. At the top of the list are foods made with wheat, including breads, cereals, and pastas, all of which can lead to intestinal gas. Other common gas-producing foods in this category are corn and potatoes. Unlike all the other starches, the one that doesn’t seem to create intestinal gas is rice.
MILK AND DAIRY
Milk and other dairy products contain a sugar called lactose, which can be difficult for your digestive tract to process if your body doesn’t have enough of the enzyme lactase. Cheese, ice cream, and milk all contain lactose, and may cause excessive gas in people. Those with lactose intolerance may need to skip these foods to avoid intestinal gas and belly pain.
OATS
Though oatmeal makes a healthy and delicious breakfast, packed full of cholesterol-reducing fiber, it's also one of the foods that can cause intestinal gas. Oatmeal, oatmeal cookies, and other oat products — including oat bran — can all result in excessive gas because of their high soluble-fiber content. If you want to eat oats for their many health benefits, try slowly adding them to your diet in limited quantities to give your body time to adjust. If you’re a fan of oat bran, try switching to wheat bran, which is high in insoluble fiber that passes through the body, usually without a problem.
BEANS
Everyone knows the ditty: "Beans, beans, the musical fruit…" As nutritious as beans are, they’re notorious as a major gas-producing food. Beans create excessive gas for two reasons. First, they have a high raffinose content — the same gas-causing sugar found in certain vegetables. Second, beans also contain soluble fiber, whose digestion releases intestinal gas. Keep track not only of the amount of beans you eat, but also of other gas-producing foods you might be eating them with, like the cheese and onions you sprinkle on your three-bean chili. Or try an over-the-counter digestive aid like Beano.
SODAS AND SOFT DRINKS
A fizzy soda or sweet, fruity drink may taste delicious and refreshing, but your belly may have trouble digesting it — and uncomfortable stomach gas may be the result. The carbonation in sodas and soft drinks is just air, which can result in uncomfortable and excessive gas. Fructose, the sugar used to sweeten some of these beverages, can also be difficult to digest, resulting in intestinal gas.
Hidden Fats in Your Diet

It's important to pay attention to how many fat grams you eat each day to make sure you're getting just the right amount of fat in your diet and no more.
The recommendation is that no more than 30 percent of your daily calories should come from fat, says Anne Wolf, RD, a researcher at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Based on the average daily total intake of 2,000 calories, this means we should eat less than 65 grams of fat each day. "Typically we're eating well over what we need," notes Wolf.
There are two kinds of fats, commonly considered "good" and "bad" fats. Saturated and trans fats are bad, as they are linked to a number of health problems, like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unsaturated fats — the good ones — can actually protect your body from some of these conditions. Still, that doesn't mean you can eat them without limit because too much of any fat, or of any food for that matter, can lead to weight gain.
When tracking the fat content of your meals, make sure that most of your fat intake is in the form of unsaturated fats, that less than 20 grams are coming from saturated fats, and that hardly any are from trans fat.
Think of the foods that frequently make up your daily meals. Have you ever considered their fat content? Here are some commonly eaten foods and where they weigh in on fat (typically the bad kinds):
- Average fast-food hamburger: 36 grams
- Average fast-food fish sandwich: 24 grams
- 10 French fries: 8 grams
- One ounce of potato chips: 10 grams
- One slice of cheese pizza: 8 grams
- Two ounces of bologna: 16 grams
- One hot dog: 14 grams
- Three slices of cooked bacon: 10 grams
- One ounce cheddar cheese: 8 grams
- One cup whole milk: 7 grams
- Two tablespoons of peanut butter: 14 grams
- One teaspoon of butter or margarine: 4 grams
- One serving of most breads, bagels, and cereals: about 1 gram
Fat Content in Your Diet: Surprisingly High-Fat Foods
While the high fat content of certain foods is no surprise, you may not realize that many other foods are loaded with hidden fat:
- Movie theater popcorn (because of the way it’s processed)
- Packaged meals with added sauces, butter, or oil
- Highly marbled red meats, including some cuts of beef and lamb — that white marbling is fat
- Chicken and other poultry if the skin is eaten
- Salad dressings
While you might know that olive and vegetable oils are high in fat, so are nuts, olives, avocados, and certain fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines. These foods contain the good, unsaturated fats — just monitor how much you eat to control your weight.
Given the high fat content of so many foods, if you're not careful, you could exceed your entire daily fat allowance by lunchtime! Keep an eye on your fat intake, and opt for unsaturated fats in place of saturated and trans fats. Your health, your heart, and your waistline will thank you.
Foods that Reduce Bone Density

You probably know that calcium and vitamin D are needed to build strong bones. But what you may not know is that there are certain elements in your diet that can actually reduce bone density, increasing your risk for osteoporosis.
Too Much Protein May Lower Bone Density
You need protein to build strong bones, but when you eat too much protein, your body produces chemicals called sulfates that can cause calcium to leach out of the bones. This effect on bones is more likely to occur with animal protein than vegetable protein. In the recent Nurses Health Study II, conducted by Harvard Medical School, 116,686 women were followed for 10 years. The researchers found that women who ate red meat at least five times a week were more likely to have a bone fracture than women who ate red meat only once a week.
The Role of Caffeinated Drinks
In a recent study of 31,527 Swedish women ages 40 to 76, conducted by the Swedish Department of Toxicology’s National Food Administration, researchers found that women who drink 330 milligrams of caffeine or more a day — the equivalent of about four cups of coffee — have an increased risk of bone fractures. This risk was especially noted in women who had a lower consumption of calcium. The researchers did not find an association between tea consumption and an increased risk for bone fractures. One reason could be that the caffeine content of tea is typically half that of coffee.
The recent Framingham Osteoporosis Study measured the bone mineral density in the spines and hips of 1,413 women and 1,125 men against the frequency of their soft drink consumption. In the Nurses Health Study II, researchers found that women taking vitamin A in doses exceeding 3,000 micrograms (mcg) a day were twice as likely to suffer a hip fracture than women who take 1,500 mcg or less a day of vitamin A. Although vitamin A is necessary for bone growth, too much of the retinol form of vitamin A interferes with vitamin D absorption, which, in turn, causes bone loss. The retinol form of vitamin A can be found in such animal-source foods as liver, egg yolks, and dairy products as well as dietary supplements. The beta carotene form of vitamin A, found in plant sources such as carrots and sweet potatoes, has not been linked with a negative impact on bone health.
Other Factors That May Raise Your Risk
Other dietary factors that can impact bone density include:
Sodium. Too much sodium in your diet can cause you to excrete calcium in your urine and perspiration. Sodium is found in table salt and many processed foods.
Oxalates, another form of salt found in some foods, can prevent you from absorbing calcium if the oxalates and calcium are contained in the same food product. Spinach, rhubarb, and sweet potatoes contain oxalates. Although these foods can play a role in a healthy diet, they should not be considered sources of calcium. Fortunately, oxalates do not interfere with the absorption of calcium from other foods eaten at the same time as the oxalate-containing foods.
Wheat bran. The only food known to reduce the absorption of calcium when eaten at the same time as calcium is 100 percent wheat bran. If you take calcium supplements, foods containing wheat bran should be eaten two or more hours before or after taking the supplement.
Alcohol. Excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages is also associated with lower bone density because alcohol interferes with the absorption of calcium and vitamin D. To lower your risk for osteoporosis, limit your intake of alcohol to one drink a day.
Rebalance With Fruits and Vegetables
“A diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in animal protein and carbohydrates, will tend to result in mild acidosis which, over time, can contribute to significant bone loss,” says Cuthrell. “Neutralizing an acid-producing diet, which can be done by eating fruits and vegetables, may be an important key to reducing bone loss while aging.”
Eating a well-balanced diet can be tricky when you are trying to keep your bones healthy. However, getting the recommended amount of calcium each day to offset any loss of calcium caused by any other foods you eat will go along way to preventing bone loss.
